Yay – we’re settled! Photos next go round. Camera is full of mud…

December 2nd had Color Creek packed and on the move to the new location on 36th & Arctic. 3 of us signed the lease the day before Thanksgiving, asked the new landlord to rip some stuff up and not touch anything else. Art studios don’t need upgrades! We hosted the Hot Headed Honeys for a successful bead and fiber show, a final party and a final sale of items that we didn’t want to move.

The new space has windows (LOTS) and enough space for us to do our own artwork. Of all the moves, this was the easiest (practice makes perfect) and the least disruptive. I can’t have workshops in the space but I can schedule one-on-ones for those of you who are serious about dyework. The best is to call me 244-7968 to schedule since I don’t keep regular hours anymore.

Stuff coming up:

Surface Design Association Alaska Member Show

Join this very select group of fiber artists at the MTS gallery this February for this special showing of all things fiber. The installation, entitled Mark This lets the artists show off their own special techniques for manipulating fabric and fiber. The show will later move to the Alaska Fiber Festival for the March 13th-14th finale at Conoco Philips atrium.

February 2010 is FASHION MONTH at the International Gallery of Contemporary Art

Special events to take place FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 5 and SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 6

LOOKING FOR ARTISTS/CREATIVE PEOPLE/FASHION SAVVY (or NOT) TO MAKE CLOTHES FIT FOR THE RUNWAY. THIS IS ABOUT INNOVATION & A DESIGN CHALLENGE. MAKE CLOTHING FOR YOUR OWN MODEL OR A VOLUNTEER MODEL. THE CHALLENGE IS TO MAKE WEARABLE WORK OF ART. CLOTHING SHOULD FIT INTO ONE OF THE FOLLOWING CATEGORIES/THEMES:

• IMPRINT (use magazines, newspapers, newspaper bags or other) – • GRAPHIC (graphic design-inspired, letters, drawing-inspired or other) – • SURVIVAL (& the Great Outdoors) -• EVENING -• MILITARY-INSPIRED – • BUTTONS – • FOOD – • REMADE OR RECYCLED – • BIG, WILD LIFE – • APPROPRIATION (open to interpretation) – • ENTWINED (rope, string, ribbon, or other) – • VALENTINE – • WEATHERED – • THEN & NOW / TRADITION & INNOVATION – • MUSIC – • ANYTHING GOES

Awards will be offered to winners. Open to 5 entries per artist All works will be on exhibit at the International Gallery of Contemporary Art from February 7 – 28

Email igca@alaskalife.net by January 10 if you’ll participate (please consider this unique event!). Please also let us know if you can provide your own runway model. Our special GUEST JUDGE will be: CHRISTOPHER STRAUB from this season’s PROJECT RUNWAY.

March 6th-14th 2010 Alaska Fiber Festival : Theme is Archi-texture.

Since I’ve done this before (a.k.a. leaving Mountain View) we don’t have a lot to sell or give away now but there are more than I care to store and I have this week to get rid of them. The workshops and parties are scheduled right up to the last minute so I will continue to use my excess frames and scarf blanks, pots and such. If you are interested in any of the following, please email or phone me.

Dye pots mixed sizes, Textile paints, Silk Screens, Fabric scraps ( all kinds), display lights, metal odds and ends, wool, silk painting frames, dress making dummies, metal baskets, plastic display torsos, gridwall display knobs, paint brushes. And probably a lot more – still need to go through the stuff.

You’ll get a practice piece and then a scarf blank to design and add color however you want. Iron it out and take it home. $45 includes all materials.

Intro to Fused Silk Fiber: Saturday, Dec 5th, 1-4 pm (moved from Nov. 7th). Create everything from silk fiber paper to molded bowls and votive candle holders. The list is endless for what can be made from pre-spun silk fiber, fused (using a polymer) into a stiff paper. Cut the “paper” and sew it into a bag or hat. Create small sculpture pieces that are molded to shape or dream up whatever you want. You’ll get enough silk to create several small projects while you are learning what this can do. $65 includes materials.
