There is a lot going on in the next couple of months.

February 5th & 6th:  Project Runway for the International Gallery.  Look forward to some amazing garments coming out of the Alaskan community for this very exciting of events.  Don’t know where yet – but put it on your calendar and watch the papers and this space for details.  Mary, Lisa, Jan, Linda and Akiko will all have garments in this show.

February 19th-March 12th : The Alaskan Members of the Surface Design Association present “Match This” – a show of personal ways of working with fibers.  This group show features such artists as Mary Hertert, Denise Gallup, Ree Nancarrow, Annie Aubie, Keren Lowell and upwards of 10 others with their own special ways of working with textiles and fibers.   Third Friday opening at the MTS Gallery in Mountain View on Mountain View Drive.

March 5th-14th: Alaska Fiber Festival presents the 2010 theme Archi-Texture.  Start off the week with a First Friday Downtown Quilt Walk and special work by Roxane Stoner and Nancy Dobson at the Virtu Gallery on 4th & D.  Spend the week studying with international artists Rachel Clark, Carol Taylor and Kathyanne White.  Make sure you take off time for a dynamite Fashion Show on March 11th orchestrated by Art Services North.  Finish the week browsing the challenge displays and vendor hall at the Conoco Philips Atrium March 13th & 14th.  The SDA Member show and Studio Art Quilts displays will anchor the finale of the week-long festival.  Make sure you get on the website and look through the challenges.  http://www.alaskafiberfestival.org

Color Creek is warm & cozy in the new spot

Yay – we’re settled!  Photos next go round.  Camera is full of mud…

December 2nd had Color Creek packed and on the move to the new location on 36th & Arctic.  3 of us signed the lease the day before Thanksgiving,  asked the new landlord to rip some stuff up and not touch anything else.  Art studios don’t need upgrades!  We hosted the Hot Headed Honeys for a successful bead and fiber show, a final party and a final sale of items that we didn’t want to move.

The new space has windows (LOTS) and enough space for us to do our own artwork.  Of all the moves, this was the easiest (practice makes perfect) and the least disruptive.  I can’t have workshops in the space but I can schedule one-on-ones for those of you who are serious about dyework.  The best is to call me 244-7968 to schedule since I don’t keep regular hours anymore.

Stuff coming up:

Surface Design Association Alaska Member Show

Join this very select group of fiber artists at the MTS gallery this February for this special showing of all things fiber.  The installation, entitled Mark This lets the artists show off their own special techniques for manipulating fabric and fiber.  The show will later move to the Alaska Fiber Festival for the March 13th-14th finale at Conoco Philips atrium.

February 2010 is FASHION MONTH at the International Gallery of Contemporary Art

Saying Goodbye to Color Creek’s open studio

To all of Color Creek’s friends,

The building we are in is sold and closed and Color Creek has to move.   We’ve chosen a very small location that will house Color Creek’s artists: Jan, Lisa, Linda, Akiko and Mary but not Color Creek’s open lab and workshops.  To that I’ll say goodbye knowing I will miss that part a lot.

Since I’ve done this before (a.k.a. leaving Mountain View) we don’t have a lot to sell or give away now but there are more than I care to store and I have this week to get rid of them.  The workshops and parties are scheduled right up to the last minute so I will continue to use my excess frames and scarf blanks, pots and such.  If you are interested in any of the following, please email or phone me.

Dye pots mixed sizes,  Textile paints, Silk Screens, Fabric scraps ( all kinds), display lights, metal odds and ends, wool, silk painting frames,  dress making dummies,  metal baskets, plastic display torsos, gridwall display knobs, paint brushes.  And probably a lot more – still need to go through the stuff.

Don’t miss the last of the Color Creek events.

  • Wednesday, Nov 25th, Intro to Batik. (full)

  • Saturday, Nov 28th, Hot-Headed Honeys, Bead and fiber boutique. 10-5 pm

  • Sunday, Nov 29th Color Creek sells off all it can and moves.

Color Creek to move or close…

Hello Friends of Color Creek-

batik-workshop

Color Creek is losing its location on Barrow as of December 1st.  The building has sold and the new owners are looking to remodel the bottom floor to fit their own needs.

If you know of a shared warehouse location that is affordable then I’d like to know about it.  My motto has always been – “Be Flexible or Go Away”.

Next – if you are one of those people who “have always wanted to come” but never made it – now is the time.  Book your party, join in a workshop or otherwise come be part of the Color Creek scene before it has to either go somewhere else or close.  Workshops are listed right on this page.

Wednesday Nov4th. Intro to Silk Painting 6-9 pm $45 (no credit cards please)

Color Creek closed November 5th-16th

Thursday, Nov 19th,  Teaser - Wrapping gifts with your designer fabrics 6:30-7:30 $15

Saturday, Nov 21st, 2 workshops:  9-noon: Reclaim your old clothing. Bring in some things and dye or paint them. Silk or cotton only. $35.  Free-form Silk Painting.  Creative painting without using hard lines. $45

Wednesday, Nov 25th, Into to Batik $45

Saturday, Nov 28th, Hot Headed Honeys, Bead and fiber boutique. 10-5 pm

Sunday, Nov 29th COLOR CREEK EITHER HAS A REALLY BIG SALE or we move.

More will be added to the calendar later.  This is a good start now though.  Here is your heads-up that the calendar is starting to fill up for special parties and events so book your friends’ party soon.   Get down and creative by painting those special gifts, dyeing up your old clothes or design your own fun.  $35 per person plus materials (unless you bring your own).

There is always something at the Creek

ZFFelted pieceThursday Teaser: Oct 15th’s Teaser is Needle Felting.  This is a great way to sculpt wool using a simple barbed needle.  Make little animals or flowers for a hat.  If you want to bring in a wool sweater, then I’ll show you how to add a design into the sweater.  This is a great anywhere style project when you have to sit in the doctor’s office and can’t wet felt.  One hour will get you pretty far into the technique.  $15 gets you some wool and needle loan.

ORGANIC SWIRL & JACKETDeep into Technique: Saturday Oct. 17th is an intensive silk painting workshop that begins at 10 pm and goes until 4.  Anything and everything you have wanted to know about silk painting techniques.  It’s helpful to have had the basic intro course but not necessary.  You’ll get plenty of practice and time to explore, ask que stions and paint to your heart’s content.  This is great for anyone who wants to jump up a level or two in their painting.

The Wax PotIntro to Batik: Wed Oct 28th, 6-9 pm.  Too fun to miss.  We work on silk because it is quick drying.  Same techniques can be used on cotton – with some modification. You’ll get a practice piece and then a scarf blank to design and add color however you want.  Iron it out and take it home. $45 includes all materials.

Lighted CabbageIntro to Fused Silk Fiber:  Saturday, Dec 5th, 1-4 pm (moved from Nov. 7th).  Create everything from silk fiber paper to molded bowls and votive candle holders.  The list is endless for what can be made from pre-spun silk fiber, fused (using a polymer) into a stiff paper.  Cut the “paper” and sew it into a bag or hat.  Create small sculpture pieces that are molded to shape or dream up whatever you want.  You’ll get enough silk to create several small projects while you are learning what this can do. $65 includes materials.

IMG_1652The fashion show at the Make It Alaskan Festival was a blast.  Nothing compares with the joy of seeing one’s creations up on the runway 3 days in a row.  I’ve moved the garments to 2nd Run on D Street and 7th in downtown Anchorage.  They are for sale there.
